Sedition in India | Sedition Law Explained | Section 124A IPC

In this video, we will talk about Sedition Law in India. Sedition is defined in Section 124A of the Indian Penal Code. The general meaning of sedition is nothing but defamation. However, in law, it envisages all those acts which disturb the tranquillity of the State and lead to people believing in opposition to the Government. It is a crime against the society at large, and not just one individual, as in defamation.

The offense was initially omitted from Macaulay’s Draft Penal Code, 1837. However, after the enactment of the IPC in 1870, the then government realized that it was important to bring a sanction for activists fighting for independence. So Section 124A was added to the IPC through the Amendment Act of 1970.
